Nashville, TN: In the Moment is a new record of original, improvised acoustic music inspired by — and geared toward — an hour-long yoga practice.
Performed live by the instrumental duo myOMtown, In the Moment follows the pace of a typical yoga session. There's an arc to the song cycle, which begins with mellow, slow-tempo tracks — a soundtrack for one's warm-up upon the yoga mat — before building in energy. The record's middle stretch, with its upbeat acoustic guitars and exploratory percussion, mirrors the prolonged, energetic height of sixty-minute yoga practice, while the final minutes evoke the cooling calm of a long savasana.
In the Moment was created and recorded in real time, with Tommy and Andrew, myOMtown's two members, improvising the music on the spot. The recording process required both musicians to be intuitive and instinctual, watching one another for creative cues without losing track of their shared muse. Yoga students themselves, they drew easy parallels between their improvisatory musical journey and their own yoga practices. Both experiences seemed to rely on the same instincts and in-the-moment presence. When it came time to give their album a name, In the Moment just made sense.
A Nashville-made product, In the Moment bypasses the usual sitars and New Age orchestration found on many yoga soundtracks. Instead, the album offers up a more natural, western approach, mixing acoustic guitars and djembe with wave drum, auxiliary percussion, and light touches of ambient keyboard. The result is an album whose spontaneity and spirited songwriting reflects not only the yoga practice that inspired it, but the American setting that housed the songwriting sessions.
When we are on our yoga mats we strive to be present and in the moment. It’s the same with music-making. These 14 “flows” were composed, performed and recorded spontaneously, “in the moment.” Both of us were listening, trusting, exploring, digging deep, tapping the unconscious.
When we let our hearts lead the way, there are no barriers to the rhythms and flow that result. We hope that you enjoy practicing to and enjoying this music as much as we did while making it.
In The Moment is also a perfect companion during rush hour traffic, cocktail parties and unwinding after a hectic day.
