Tommy Wiggins presents the first of his sonic travelog "Postcard" series - songs and nature sounds gathered while immersed in beautiful places.

"Mountains, meadows, tumbleweed, tides. I love exploring new places and capturing the sounds of theses spaces.

These "Postcards From..." journeys are where new songs and memories are made. This is POSTCARD FROM CAPE ANN, as witnessed from my perch above Wingaersheek Beach, Cape Ann, MA USA. My mid-summer visit to this rocky point was sunny and warm. I am told that winter Nor'easters are neither sunny nor warm." tw

Surfers dream of the perfect wave, writers search for just the right words… and I spent a week at Cape Ann in Massachusetts trying to record the sound of a "perfect" tide. Why? I just wanted to take home some of the magic of my week by the sea.

This should be easy, right? Set up a couple microphones, hit "record" and presto, instant "sounds of nature" CD! Not so. Microphones capture a lot more than our ears do… power boats, children on the beach (left speaker), the occasional dog (despite the "no dogs" sign), airplanes and anything else that happens to wander into range. "Keeping it real" is ok for most endeavors, but I just wanted natural stuff, thank you. Also, I decided against recording the evening bacchanal bonfires on the beach to protect guilty participants and innocent ears. You know who you are.

The gods of the sea were kind. I was able to capture some righteous shore sounds. This CD contains three tracks for your listening pleasure, all recorded from my perch above the rocks at Jaga Cottage, Wingaersheek Beach, Cape Ann, just outside of Glouchester, MA USA.

For Morning Tide, I woke up every day around around four to check things out. If there was too much wind (mics hate wind), I went back to bed. If there wasn't, I'd set up the mics and hit the red button. The beach was empty of people, and things were pretty mellow until the fishing boats started filling the bay with their varying pitched engines.

There's more activity during Evening Tide and it shows. Track 3 is an absolute gift of a song that sometimes happens during my songwriting trips. Madeline of the Sea is wholly inspired by the locale, and is my way of giving something back to a special place that has such a rich and rugged history.

Astrid Matthews, whose family has summered at Jaga Cottage for over fifty years took these marvelous photographs. We decided to stay with black and white to give you a chance to color them in your own mind as you float away (wherever you are) listening to the sounds of the surf and the sea.

P.S. Here come the young boys (Evening Tide, right speaker) trying to catch that big striped bass that got away yesterday. I watched them reel it in twice! Maybe this time they'll take the hook out after they have the fish in the net. Either way, I like to watch.
